"content": "Patients in the HDU can also be put back into the ICU if their condition deteriorates. The term “ICU” refers to a specialized unit designed for providing the highest level of medical care for patients. In contrast, the term “critical care” is generally used to denote provision of a high level of medical care but not necessarily from a unit specialized for the same. Thus, critical care can be provided in a transport vehicle like an ambulance, outpatient departments as well as general hospital wards, operating theatres or anywhere one finds the patient. This type of care is considered primary or resuscitation-based. Therefore, it is vital. Primary resuscitation should always be performed before transferring the patient to the definitive ICU for optimum care."
