"content": "Mr. Temporary Speaker, Sir, President Kikwete’s Speech was short but very clear. It communicated a number of important things. First, President Kikwete underscored the longstanding political and diplomatic ties between our two countries. I think this brotherhood and good neighbourliness will go a long way in strengthening the historical ties that exist between the people of the United Republic of Tanzania and the Republic of Kenya. His Excellency President Kikwete also narrated his personal experience and the role he played when our own country – Kenya – had political challenges and descended into chaos. What touched many of us who listened to him on that day was the fact that he actually told us that nobody invited him to Kenya. When our country was in trouble, he actually started engaging and contacting Kenyans friends whom he knew, including my brother, Sen. Wetangula, whom he singled out for doing a good job in terms of trying to look for a hand from our neighbours to resolve the challenges that we had in 2007/2008. As Kenyans and Africans, we will remain indebted to the contribution of President Jakaya Kikwete – behind the scenes and also in public – to make sure that together with Kenyan leaders, we were able to restore our country to normalcy after the short period of madness that visited us after the 2007 General Election. His Excellency President Kikwete also said and emphasized that the cooperation between Kenya and Tanzania remains strong in the fight against terrorism, trans- boundary crime, fight against narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, fight against illegal trade in wildlife, rule of law and quest for justice in our region. This relationship is good for our two countries and is something that has even improved during the ten years that His Excellency President Kikwete has been the President of the Republic of Tanzania. Mr. Temporary Speaker, Sir, the Speech also highlighted or brought into the fore a number of areas of cooperation that the two countries have achieved in the years that President Kikwete has been in office. Sometimes, we try to look at the challenges that our two countries have gone through, ignoring the successes and strong areas where cooperation has triumphed over differences. He was able to bring out two important projects. The first one – the Athi River-Namanga-Arusha Road - was completed in 2012 during the leadership of President Kikwete and President Mwai Kibaki. He also highlighted a road project which has just begun under the leadership of President Kikwete and President Uhuru Kenyatta, that is, the Mwatate-Taveta-Holili-Moshi-Arusha The electronic version of the Senate Hansard Report is for information purposes only.
