"content": "The colonial rulers were shocked at the way the movement had organised itself and spread all over this country. When the colonial rulers realised this, they declared a state of emergency in the country. It was at this time that the people of central Kenya and its surroundings faced brutality of the British colonial rule. As time went on, with the state of emergency spreading to other parts of the country, the Mau Mau movement became stronger and more opposed to the declaration of the state of emergency. The Mau Mau intensified the struggle against colonial rule more than ever before. The Mau Mau freedom fighters continued to get support countrywide and even from outside the country, and this eventually earned us Independence. I want to thank and appreciate members of the Mau Mau War Veterans Association, who were courageous enough to claim compensation from the British Government. I would, most sincerely, like to thank hon. Gitu wa Kahengeri and his group for being bold enough to seek compensation from the British Government on behalf of those who survived the state of emergency. However, Dini ya Musambwa and other groups who started the struggle outside Kiambu and Nyeri were not considered for compensation."
