I rise pursuant to Standing Order No.45(2)(b) to seek a Statement from the chairperson of the Standing Committee on Commerce, Finance and Budget regarding our currencies bearing portraits of an individual. The Constitution of Kenya 2010 Article 231(4) states that; “Notes and coins issued by the Central Bank of Kenya may bear images that depict or symbolize Kenya or an aspect of Kenya but shall not bear the portrait of any individual.” In the Statement, the Chairperson should explain:- (a) What steps the Governor of the CBK, Dr. Patrick Ngugi Njoroge, has taken to ensure our notes and coins bear no portrait of an individual in compliance with the Constitution. (b) If this has happened, when will the Governor of the CBK roll out the currency that is in conformity with the Constitution? (c) If the Governor is aware that by continuing to print portraits of an individual on our currency, he is in breach of the Constitution and can lead to his impeachment."
