"content": "The other day I was thinking about the issue of malaria. I know malaria belongs to the domain of public health, but it has a basis in environment. We are told that stagnant water bodies enable mosquitoes to thrive. The Government can invest effectively in a clean environment and, therefore, add years and years to the life expectancy of the poor people, whose life expectancy is shorter. Making the environment cleaner may add five or 10 years. If we do not that, are we, in essence, committing a public crime? Are we being completely disingenuous in what we intend to do? We should take aggressive steps to disrupt the life cycle of the anopheles mosquitoes that cause malaria. Are we responsible for the loss of life of children under five years that occurs so much in our country? Are we not able to rise up as a legislature, working with the Executive, to put in place aggressive measures beyond us hiding behind nets at night instead of going out there and fighting the mosquitoes head on? We can take over from this process we have started. We should think about having a clean environment and not having stagnant waters that add to diseases. We will get things that will make a difference."
