    "content": "Thank you, Hon. Temporary Deputy Speaker, for giving me this opportunity to support the Value Added Tax (Amendment) Bill. As Hon. Wamunyinyi puts it, it is true that sugar comes from our own farms. The cost of producing a tonne of sugar in this country is so high. I was wondering how one can think of taxing a transporter who is carrying sugarcane from the farm. The transporters pass that tax to the farmer. The cost of producing sugarcane becomes so high for the farmer. This discourages farmers to go back to the farms and produce sugar. It is important for this House to look at this critically and advise our Government and the National Treasury that they should be careful in deciding VAT.
