"content": "Mr. Speaker, Sir, food crops in the affected districts have weathered due to water stress. Crop production is expected to decline by over 30 percent in some parts of the country, while total crop failure maybe experienced in parts of eastern, coast and central Kenya, which are short rain dependent. Some schools are yet to open due to water problems in the affected areas. Schools in 96 districts are under the School Feeding Programme, which has been adversely affected by lack of water due the drought. Power supply remains fair, but declining as the drought progress. Maximum power generation is being undertaken through hydro and thermal generation to conserve water usage in Masinga Dam. The Sondu Miriu water level is declining. Should the situation continue to deteriorate, then power generation will be negatively affected, increasing reliance on thermal power generation, which is more expensive."
