Patience Wambui The students will be attached to the Senate for two weeks from 7th to 18th November, 2016 under the Voluntary Service Scheme Programme (VSSP). Hon. Senators, you may recall that since 2013, the Senate has hosted students serving under this VSSP from the Starehe Boys Centre and, more recently, Starehe Girls’ Centre. Nginda Girls Secondary School is, therefore, the third school to participate in this VSSP and serves as an indicator of the interest that schools serve in exposing the students to the institutions of governance in our great Republic. The VSSP has enabled the Senate play a vital role in shaping young minds and fulfilling its obligations under the Constitution by promoting good and democratic governance. The principle purpose of the VSSP is to enhance awareness amongst members of the public, especially the youth, of the role of the Senate and the Parliament of Kenya as an arm of Government. The VSSP is also designed to be a platform for mentorship of young persons to inspire them to consider a career in public service, expose them to the working environment and bridge the gap between the academics and the real life experiences at the work place. On behalf of the Senate and on my own behalf, I welcome them to the Senate and wish them well for the remainder of their stay. I hope they have a fruitful programme. I thank you."
