"content": "Madam Temporary Speaker, when the President read his Speech, I put on my best behavior. I did not come with a whistle because I thought and believed that the President was going to tell Kenyans something tangible and substantial about how the Jubilee Administration has realized the national values espoused in Article 10 of the Constitution. The Speech was in very good English. The President went to St. Mary’s School, therefore, it is expected that his English is good. However, it is full of alternative facts. It is full of statements that cannot be verified. Article 10 of the Constitution requires the President to talk to us and tell the nation to what extent his administration has achieved the realization of the national values which are clearly defined. There are many things that it talks about; patriotism, national unity, devolution, human dignity, equity, social justice, inclusiveness, human rights, non-discrimination and protection of the marginalized. However, the speech writer and other people in the ‘house on the hill’ focused on only one national value called sustainable development. Madam Temporary Speaker, the President’s speech was about development. Whether it was sustainable development or not, the greater effort and most of the words in the Speech addressed the value called sustainable development. I struggled to see how this Speech talked about realization of the value called national unity, patriotism, rule of law or democracy.
