    "content": "Even though we support this Bill, there are industries in this country which are uncompetitive. We have a big problem with sugar right now. The price of a kilogramme of sugar in supermarkets is Kshs210, simply because we are protecting our uncompetitive sugar industry. The President was in Uganda last year to negotiate something to do with sugar, and there was real opposition, especially from sugarcane-growing regions. You are unable to supply us with good sugar. People are now suffering because of the rise in the price of sugar. This needs to be addressed. If an industry is not competitive, it should not be overprotected. If Brazil produces sugar at a third of the cost of production in Kenya, we need to re-look into that aspect, so that we do not simply protect a few people at the expense of the majority of the consumers who are being forced to purchase some of these commodities at exorbitant prices."
