"content": "Thank you very much, Hon. Deputy Speaker. I rise to support the Motion for Adjournment on the issue of the presidential election. I support it because I realise that we cannot, as a country, continue to bury our heads in the sand. We all need to rise to the reality that we are living in very precarious times and these are special times when we are called upon as the leadership in this country to take action. We are living in the reality of a ruling made by the Supreme Court where we have been ordered to go back for a presidential election and the implications are clear. For us who come from this city, we house the Nairobi Securities Exchange. As of last week, the NSE reported a loss of close to Kshs130 billion, which was directly attributed to the Supreme Court ruling. The transport business in this city reported a loss of close to Kshs25 billion. Currently, with the uncertainty of the date of the presidential election, we are glaring at a threat to over one million young Kenyans who might not sit national examinations which they have prepared for, for the last four and eight years respectively. Therefore, something needs to be done. That something needs to be done, first and foremost, by this House. First, we need to stop bemoaning what has happened in the past and look for a way forward. My proposal is to start exploring how we can make the repeat election possible on 26th of October. This House is mandated and has the powers to make the repeat presidential election simple and verifiable, and ensure that it conforms with all other principles that the Constitution stipulates. That is why I am inviting Members from the minority side to join us not in castigating an institution or individuals, but in finding a way of moving forward for this country – a way that is as painless as possible. This is one election. As a country, we have gone through general elections where we have conducted six elections on one day. In this case, we are seeking to conduct just the presidential election. What we are witnessing right now are acts that are not in good faith.
