"content": "building bridges marked an important and historic moment for the country; AWARE that this extraordinary opportunity will enable Kenyans to face and address the challenges currently faced, and openly and honestly discuss successes and failures and finally formulate and implement the necessary corrective measures for the country to move forward; RECOGNIZING the fundamental values encapsulated in the Constitution of Kenya on the aspirations of all Kenyans for a Government based on the fundamental principles of human rights, social justice, the rule of law and a shared prosperity for all; COMMITTED to the determination of all Kenyans to live in peace as one indivisible sovereign nation; RECOGNIZING that the need to put structures and build bridges towards the rebirth of a new all-inclusive and cohesive nation as agreed by the two leaders on 9th March, 2018 will require the support and the goodwill from all arms of Government and relevant institutions; FURTHER RECOGNIZING that there is need to roll out and implement programmes on a shared vision and objectives in a bi-partisan manner as was agreed by the two distinguished leaders; NOW THEREFORE – (i) The thanks of the Senate be recorded in commending His Excellency the President Uhuru Kenyatta and Right Honourable Raila Odinga for providing leadership in the patriotic task of promoting unity, peace and harmony in the country and initiating the move towards building bridges to a new Kenyan nation. (ii) The Senate Commits itself to support and advance, within its mandate, the aims and objectives of this initiative as contained in the memorandum signed by the two leaders titled; ‘Building Bridges to a new Kenyan nation’ and to act appropriately on any incidental and consequential draft legislation or the execution of legal instruments. Mr. Speaker, Sir, I will try and spend about ten minutes so that everybody may have a chance to contribute to this Motion. First of all, at the outset, let me congratulate the two leaders for finding it fit in the name of the people of Kenya to be seen together shaking hands after a fruitful meeting. They agreed on common concerns and a vision towards resolving the problems that faced the nation. Indeed, during that historic moment when this occurred, Kenyans were happy that Kenya was moving in a new direction. Leadership is never easy; in fact, in the world of politics we tend to commend most leaders many years after they have gone. When they stood out to provide leadership at a particular moment, many people have not seen the need of the value of some of those meetings. I want to remind this House, there are some incidences of historical nature that have affected nations after the leaders have decided to come together to resolve the problems facing their nations.
