"content": " Hon. Temporary Deputy Chairman, I wish to support that amendment. As the Chair of the Departmental Committee on Finance and National Planning has mentioned, we are talking about the manufacturing sector of our economy. All of us are drivers and many of the batteries we use in this country are Chinese made. Manufacturers in our neighbouring country of Tanzania manufacture cheaper batteries and sell them here at the expense of our local manufacturers. I fully agree with the Chair that this will give new gravitas and impetus to the manufacturing of batteries locally, not just to create employment, but also to reenergise our manufacturing. The second issue is about the cost of power. As I mentioned earlier, if we are to drive the manufacturing agenda, we must make sure that the cost of power comes down. The solar batteries are the ones which will help to bring the cost of power down not only for our manufacturing industries, but also for our consumers of electricity."
