"content": "The cashew nut was a pride of the coastal people. Many farms in Coast Province were full of cashew nut trees many years back in the 1980s, 1990s and up to the year 2000. The cashew nut tree was our pride because we had the Kenya Cashew Nut Factory Plant that was located in Kilifi County, but in the year 2000, the plant collapsed and since then, there have been very minimal effort to revive it. Because of the collapse of the plant, many small-scale farmers in Kilifi County and other parts of the Coast Province who were entirely depending on the cashew nut plant as a source of revenue, lost the motivation to continue growing this plant. The cashew nut tree is a hardy and tolerant tree that does not require a lot of rain. If you look at what is happening at the Coast, because of lack of motivation, many small-scale farmers have decided to chop off their cashew nut trees because they have no means of getting a ready market for the cashew nuts."
