"content": "The IPU is one of the most important international organisations in the world today. I am fortunate to be a member of the International Law Commission (ILC), which is an organ of the UN. I am the first Vice-Chairperson of that august body. We had very good discussions in the last session with the officials of the IPU and the United Nations High Commission for Human Rights (UNHCR) on how we can make Parliament be on the forefront of fighting for human rights in the world. The fight for human rights in the world has been undertaken by the civil society organisations, which are not elected bodies, but just persons who come together and are committed to promote human rights. I represented the International Law Commission, IPU and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. It was a feeling of these bodies that time has now come for the elected leaders to assume the role of being on the forefront of fighting for human rights, gender rights and the rights of people living with disabilities. We should not leave that job to civil societies, which despite doing a good job, are not elected. By the virtue that we are elected, we should be at the forefront of the fight for human rights."
