"content": "It also puts controls so that we do not have a particular gender that dominates representation in this House. I know men dominate right now because they are more than women. That is what we are trying to engender. We are trying to ensure that women are also present here. If you look at the history of this country politically, it started with one woman. It is in 1969 when Grace Onyango was the first woman to be elected. It has been many years since. With time, women have come on board. We are talking of 76 in this House today. It is quite a big progress but with a huge challenge before us. Women have struggled but the challenges are still there. The challenge will be finished or will be set aside once this law is implemented. We tried this law in the last Parliament and it failed despite the fact that our political leaders were there. I remember our political leader, Hon. Raila Odinga, was sitting up there. It still failed. It has failed several times. Let us make sure it does not this time round. It is because the Bill simply sensitises the society that women have a space and opportunities just like men. You will see that the entire society is going to be gender sensitive once this Bill is passed. You are going to see a situation where they will think of men and women on equal terms on anything that happens. That is where we are moving towards. That is what gender equality is all about. We need to have this equality all through, not only in politics but also in other spheres of development."
