    "content": "Mr. Deputy Speaker, Sir, I still do not know with certainty how long we are going to have the COVID-19 pandemic around us and how far the spread will go. Therefore, let us not lose focus on those illnesses and diseases that I have mentioned. Fortunately for us, however, up to this point, we have not seen the kind of devastation and death that COVID-19 has brought upon us compared to other developed countries like the US, Italy and Britain. However, what we know for sure is that, unless care is taken to mitigate the adverse impact COVID-19 is likely to have on other essential health services, we are likely to have many more deaths arising from malaria, and other diseases of public health importance such as HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis. Mr. Deputy Speaker, Sir, as I conclude, allow me to state that I appreciate the fact that other countries with stronger and more resilient health systems than ours are already battling under the pressure of this new disease. However, while more developed countries in the West may have the luxury of dedicating all their time and resources to COVID-19, the case is not the same for us as the numbers I had indicated earlier show. Unless we move with speed to innovate and tailor-make our response according to our unique needs and challenges, we face the very real risk of reversing all the gains we have made so far in the prevention and control of malaria and the other diseases that I had earlier on mentioned. This in itself poses an even greater long-term threat to our health system than the current COVID-19 outbreak. As such, urgent and immediate action is required. I thank you."
