"content": " Thank you, Hon. Temporary Speaker, for the opportunity to contribute to the Motion on consideration of nominees for appointment as Cabinet Secretaries. First, I want to go on record and put this clearly that I support the candidature and approval of Ms Hanna Wendot Cheptumo but with a rider that we request her to apologise to the women of Kenya. That was indeed a careless statement. There is nothing wrong with making a mistake but you can correct it by following it with an apology. She can do a public apology on the social media, dailies or in a press statement. That is the minimum that we expect from her. I think it will be wrong for us women leaders, especially someone like me who has been in the women’s movement for a long time, to trivialise those statements and not say anything about it. We owe it to the women of this country. We also owe it to them, to take seriously the issue of femicide which is almost becoming a national problem. "content": "because we do not want to look like we are ignoring it. We also need to make sure that the next people do not make the same careless mistakes in their statements when they are speaking. Yes, I support her approval and that of Hon. Ruku, who has been my desk mate while he was in Bunge. I also approve that. Even as I say this, Ms Wendot Cheptumo is somebody personally known to me. Not only was her late husband my classmate, but she was also my student at the University of Nairobi when she came to study law. So, yes, she is known to me but it would be wrong for me, having been her teacher not to acknowledge that what she said was unfortunate. That is all I have to say. Thank you."
