  • 10 Nov 2020 in Senate: I have seen in the newspapers that on 27th of this month, His Excellency the President will be at the tea auction in Mombasa to launch that digital platform. That is courtesy of work that has been done by this particular House. The journey is still long because there are many things we are calling upon the Government to do, so as to respect the gainful place of our tea farmers. In other countries, farmers are respected and accorded their pride of place because of their contribution to the economy. One time while visiting the City of Des Moines in ... view
  • 10 Nov 2020 in Senate: I agree with Sen. Khaniri that despite the fact that various gains have been made, a lot of work needs to be done. I also agree with Sen. Omogeni. This morning, a group of friends that represent tea farmers in this Parliament gave a press conference. We called out for the creation of a Guaranteed Minimum Returns Fund in the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI), to ensure that when farmers plant green grams, corn, sugarcane, tea, coffee or whatever they produce, the Government should ensure that there is a Fund that stabilises the market for them. If it gets to a ... view
  • 10 Nov 2020 in Senate: Mr. Speaker, Sir, it is my sincere hope that those views will be taken into consideration and we shall take the concerns of our tea farmers. There are many things I would have wished to say but in the interest of our colleagues who also want to speak, let me leave it at that. I appreciate the Statement by our colleague Sen. Khaniri on behalf of the tea farmers. view

  • 4 Nov 2020 in Senate: Thank you, Madam Deputy Speaker. This is a very important issue. The difference between civilized societies; countries that care for their citizens and place a premium over people’s lives over profit is in how they handle such issues. As a nation, I am afraid that we have not done well in this area despite the fact that this is plainly about human lives. It is not a discussion about profit, plastic or the degradation of the environment. It is purely about human lives. This is such a serious indictment on us as leaders. Where do citizens of this country looking ... view
  • 4 Nov 2020 in Senate: Statement alone is not enough. All the issues raised by my colleagues, Senators who have spoken, including even Government parastatals--- I served in the Committee on Energy. If Sen. Mutula Kilonzo Jnr. was here, he would have brought to the attention of this House the damage that the Kenya Pipeline has caused to the people of Makueni with the oil spills in Kibwezi. I cannot remember the other place. They have appeared before the Committee. Citizens have come before us, as Senators, and said: “There is nowhere else where we can go and we are looking up to you as ... view
  • 4 Nov 2020 in Senate: Madam Deputy Speaker, I rise pursuant to Standing Order No. 48(1) to seek a Statement from the Standing Committee on Health regarding the operations of the non- payment of COVID-19 claims by the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) and private medical insurance companies. view
  • 4 Nov 2020 in Senate: In the Statement the Committee should- (1) Explain why the NHIF has declined to meet treatment cost of its members who are being diagnosed with COVID-19. (2) State why private medical insurance companies have also declined to cater for treatment cost for their clients suffering from COVID-19. (3) State the official position of the Insurance Regulatory Authority of Kenya (IRA) with regards to the obligations of NHIF and private insurance companies in meeting the treatment costs of their members who have contracted COVID-19. This is an urgent matter, Madam Deputy Speaker. view

  • 3 Nov 2020 in Senate: Thank you, Mr. Speaker, Sir. This is for the history books. This has made me proud to be a Senator. I am so happy for the decision that we took as a House on that day, to first of all, reaffirm our commitment to Article 3 of our Constitution, that we shall defend our Constitution at every instance. This is one such instance where as a House, we resolved that it is more important to be united as the House of the Senate than to be divided along the usual parochial party lines that we are so used, yet on ... view
