  • 29 May 2007 in National Assembly: Mr. Temporary Deputy Speaker, Sir, the Ministry's policy is that when such cases come to our notice, the teacher is immediately interdicted. When investigations are done, further action is taken whether the parents or the administration take the case to court or the parents take that responsibility. Under no circumstances do we allow teachers whose pupils have reported that they are being harassed sexually to stay in schools because we believe that children do not lie. A child will not say that she has been sexually harassed if she has not been harassed. When it comes to grown-ups, it is ... view
  • 29 May 2007 in National Assembly: Mr. Temporary Deputy Speaker, Sir, sexual harassment is a crime like any other crime and it is dealt with through the same machinery. However, on our part as a Ministry, when a case is reported, it is investigated. Sometimes it is very difficult to establish the facts, but if evidence is found, even headmasters are dismissed. We are not doubting the teachers, but we must have something tangible to prosecute him as required by the law. We will definitely support all female teachers who complain of such harassment. Equally, we will protect the male teachers if they happen to be ... view
  • 24 May 2007 in National Assembly: Mr. Deputy Speaker, Sir, I apologise to the hon. Member for not getting a written answer. I also got this answer just now, which is not even signed by the Minister or Assistant Ministers, including myself. I am not pleased with the answer because I do not think that it is truthful and factual, since I am a little bit aware of the type of the problem. Mr. Deputy Speaker, Sir, I would, therefore, request the hon. Member to allow me to follow up this matter, and come up with a proper answer. Could you, please, defer the Question? view
  • 24 May 2007 in National Assembly: Mr. Deputy Speaker, Sir, first, I started by apologising. I have been following this answer since morning, but it was not forthcoming. However, I want to assure the hon. Member that I carry her sentiments and I am personally aggrieved by this very case. We will ensure that the female teachers will not be mistreated. We will also ensure that they are reinstated. But, I would like to come back with a proper answer. Mr. Deputy Speaker, Sir, if I read this answer, I will be putting my stamp on something which is not true, because part of the information ... view

  • 24 May 2007 in National Assembly: Mr. Deputy Speaker, Sir, that is quite a separate Question and it is not part of the answer here. But I would like t o assure the Member that, we will intensify our efforts.
