  • 1 Dec 2021 in Senate: If you have somebody on a three-year contract they cannot even access loans, they are not able to plan their income adequately. That sector has problems and as Senators, we need to find ways of addressing it so that the welfare of these ECDE teachers is taken care of. They are the ones who nurture our young children. If we do not take good care of them then they will not do a good job for these young children. view

  • 17 Nov 2021 in Senate: Thank you, Mr. Speaker, Sir. First, on my part, I want to come to the defense of our good friend, Sen. M. Kajwang’. We know the problems that his Committee has faced for a long time. It is us who contributed to non-functionality of that Committee because they did not have quorum for a long time. So, we are being unfair to him and his Members when we direct all the blame to him while to some extent, this House is to blame. We considered a matter this morning where a number of Senators, including Sen. Wetangula, were present. Just ... view
  • 16 Nov 2021 in Senate: Mr. Speaker, Sir, I thank the Chairperson of the Committee on Devolution and Intergovernmental Relations for the Statement that he has read this afternoon. I congratulate him and his Members for the good work they are doing in that Committee. I also want to join the Senators who have spoken before me to register my concern on the lackluster manner in which we handle suits that are filed against the work that is being done by the Senate. When we had a Kamkunji last week, I said that it will be useful if this House took note of the fact ... view
  • 16 Nov 2021 in Senate: Let us be candid and honest. We should accept, as Senators, that the functions of this Senate were poorly drafted in this Constitution. Unless we retreat as Senators, deliberate on the amendments that this country needs to undertake to empower this Senate, we will be crybabies. As we sit, we are all praying that the decision that will come from the Supreme Court will be favourable to the kind of jurisprudence that is coming from the High Court and the Court of Appeal. Woe unto us if the Supreme Court upholds the views that have been expressed by the High ... view
  • 16 Nov 2021 in Senate: done by the county assemblies, we know what happens with them. The proper House that should have checks and balances on our governors is this House. Mr. Speaker, Sir, I do not want to influence the Judiciary, but I hope that when they retreat to consider these cases, they will put the interest of the common mwananchi who must receive services. When we fight very hard to send money to our counties; when the money goes to Nyamira, Nandi, Bungoma and the other counties, it is the hope and wish of every Senator that that money will go to offer ... view
  • 11 Nov 2021 in Senate: Thank you, Mr. Speaker, Sir, for also giving me an opportunity to make a contribution to this Statement by Sen. Nyamunga. At times, we cannot fail to acknowledge how some of us can pick issues that many of us do not think about. I have known friends who have children suffering from SCD but I had never imagined a Senator would elevate this to the level of it being a disability. It has taken me sitting here and listening to the Statement by Sen. Nyamunga and I think she has convinced me that people suffering from SCD in the society ... view
  • 11 Nov 2021 in Senate: Sorry, Mr. Speaker, Sir. This is the problem when you stay away for too long and you leave the sit in the hands of Madam Speaker. view

  • 11 Nov 2021 in Senate: Mr. Speaker, Sir, I apologize. Anybody who is suffering from a condition that is life long, not curable, causes pain, discomfort and makes them to behave in a manner that is not in tandem with a normal person, qualifies to be called a person who is suffering from some disability. That is the medical condition that afflicts people suffering from sickle cell. These are people who to be maintained in certain lifestyle in society, they need to be affirmed to compete with people in certain clusters of employment. Therefore, I fully support the Statement that has been sought by the ... view
