  • 14 Feb 2024 in Senate: In fact, for the fine, if you convert the amount charged using the Kenyan exchange which is the shilling to the dollar, the fine for the US Senate is 100,000 US Dollars. That is equivalent to Kshs15 million and what we are proposing here is Kshs2 million. Therefore, if you do not comply, the Senate has even what they call criminal contempt powers of Congress. If you do not respond, they can convict you and sentence you to a maximum of 12 months; not less than four not more than 12. If you remember in 1982, there was a lady ... view

  • 14 Feb 2024 in Senate: Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to appear before NADCO. Four responded and appeared. However, the former chairman and the two commissioners wrote a contemptuous letter in response to the summons and said, they will not appear. We were helpless, looking at the important task that was before that Committee, appointed with the approval of the President and with the leader of official opposition. If we have these amendments in place, nobody will ever take this House for granted. Not just this House, even the National Assembly. Nobody will ever take us for granted. If it is of any comfort, these powers that ... view

  • 13 Feb 2024 in Senate: Mr. Speaker, Sir, we want to assure you that we shall firmly stand behind you. We need to protect devolution and the Senate. We need concurrence that gives the Senate an opportunity to have an input in all Bills that come to Parliament. Often times, Bills are dealt with in the National Assembly without the involvement of the Senate. That business should be a thing of the past. We have very good jurisprudence from the Supreme Court. So, we need to elevate the stature of this House. Senators now have a lot of presence at the county level. I hope ... view
