  • 15 Oct 2008 in National Assembly: Mr. Deputy Speaker, Sir, as I have already indicated, we are in the process of recruiting nurses. My Ministry will be able to send nurses to those dispensaries once we recruit them. Although we are actually recruiting about 1,500 nurses, we are far from reaching the actual number of nurses that can provide health services in the country. We shall continue to employ more nurses when funds are available. view
  • 15 Oct 2008 in National Assembly: Mr. Deputy Speaker, Sir, since I worked in the Civil Service, let me assure this House that deliberate efforts have been made to train locals from North Eastern Province and post them there. However, as soon as they finish college, they opt to go to other bigger towns such as Nairobi, Nakuru and Mombasa. So, really I do not know whether that will be a cure. But we shall continue making deliberate efforts to recruit nurses from those areas and send them back to serve the Kenyan people. view
  • 15 Oct 2008 in National Assembly: Mr. Deputy Speaker, Sir, at the moment, we have a policy that every nurse who is recruited stays in the station for three years. We shall continue enforcing that policy to ensure that they will stay there and give services. Five years is a little bit too long. view
  • 15 Oct 2008 in National Assembly: Mr. Deputy Speaker, Sir, we shall continue reviewing these issues. I can assure this House that we shall look at all those things with a view to serving all the Kenyan people. view
  • 8 Oct 2008 in National Assembly: Mr. Speaker, Sir, I beg to reply. (a) Yes, I am aware that six dispensaries in Ijara District, namely, Korisa, Ruga, Sangole, Handaro, Jalish and Bodhai were constructed using public funds including the CDF. (b) Yes, I am aware that out of the six dispensaries only two, namely, Handaro and Korisa, are currently operational. The nurses who are working in the other four dispensaries resigned citing hardship conditions in the area. (c) My Ministry is in the process of sourcing for nurses to deploy to the facilities. We have also initiated the community health strategy, whereby community health workers under ... view
  • 8 Oct 2008 in National Assembly: Mr. Speaker, Sir, this Question was asked sometime ago and we gave an answer then. The new answer should have reached the House. view

  • 30 Jul 2008 in National Assembly: Mr. Speaker, Sir, I beg to reply. (a) I am aware that my Ministry experienced a shortage of BCG vaccine over the past one month, namely, June, 2008. That affected the entire country, including Kisumu Town West Constituency. The supply has now resumed. As I speak, there are vaccines all over the country. (b) My Ministry procures its annual requirements of vaccines once annually, but the stock is supplied to us quarterly. This is because our national, regional and district depots have no capacity to store these variable items. But we are trying as much as possible, as a Ministry, ... view
  • 30 Jul 2008 in National Assembly: Mr. Speaker, Sir, I would like to say that the BCG Vaccine is a very tricky one. We used a lot of vaccines during the post-election violence in the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps. Each vaccine contains 20 dosages. Once we use it on even one baby, we have to throw the rest away. As a result, this fore-casting was not anticipated. That is why we lacked BCG in particular. All the other antigens were available. view
  • 30 Jul 2008 in National Assembly: Mr. Speaker, Sir, I want to assure this House that this kind of delay will not occur any more. view
