  • 25 Sep 2019 in National Assembly: I thank you, Hon. Temporary Deputy Speaker, for giving me this opportunity. I rise also on the same breath to put more weight on this Amendment Bill by supporting it. No one chooses where to be born. If we had that latitude, I would have chosen to be born within the President’s family, but I ended up being where I am because I had absolutely no choice. Therefore, issues pertaining to adoption and the circumstances around it are very important that if a child is in a desperate need to be adopted, we have to put a level- playing field ... view
  • 25 Sep 2019 in National Assembly: the responsibility to teachers and teachers passing over that responsibility to parents. Therefore, we are raising a generation that cannot withstand the test of time. That is why when young people are provoked, the only thing they can think about is committing suicide. That is why we have had increased cases of children committing suicide in various homes. We should step back, reflect and retool as parents and give children what ought to be given to them and that is discipline. That discipline does not necessarily have to come from school. In due course, with a lot of love to ... view
  • 25 Sep 2019 in National Assembly: Our parents, while growing up, gave us what can pass for corporal punishment, but we never died. Our children must be given some level of discipline because if we do not do so now, no one will do it for us. I also understand the degree of influence that television stations and cell phones have on children. I know of many responsible parents who will never allow their children to have cell phones. The current generation, out of assumption of civility, has chosen to give cell phones to very young children to keep in school and at home. Parents do ... view

  • 25 Sep 2019 in National Assembly: Hon. Temporary Deputy Speaker, this is a House of rules and traditions and the Office of the Clerk will always inform any Member with a pending Bill to be discussed to be available. This is the second time that particular Hon. Member is absconding his duty. We need to completely drop this Bill and focus on more important issues. If he is a member of tanga tanga, then let us give him time to tanga tanga and concentrate more on important things. view
  • 24 Sep 2019 in National Assembly: Thank you, Hon. Deputy Speaker. Hon. Odanga’s position on lateness on responses by various Cabinet Secretaries ought to be looked into keenly. Today, in my Committee on Special Funds, and I see my Chairman here, we had expected to have a Principal Secretary who had been properly summoned in line with our Standing Orders to appear before us, but there was no response from the PS or even his Office. He never showed up! I remember two months ago, the Hon. Speaker alluded to what needs to happen in case of an absence or failure to appear by Cabinet Secretaries. ... view
  • 18 Sep 2019 in National Assembly: Thank you, Hon. Temporary Deputy Speaker for this opportunity. I rise to support the Employment (Amendment) Bill (National Assembly Bill No.15 Of 2019) that is before us. It is on giving an opportunity to adoptees of children an opportunity to enjoy both maternity and paternity leaves. That is critical. Our Constitution that we midwifed and promulgated in 2010 pays great credence to Chapter 4 of the came Constitution on the Bill of rights. It pays much attention to fundamental freedoms that we enjoy. While crafting this fundamental chapter, the intention was to abhor issues of discrimination. A parent is a ... view
  • 18 Sep 2019 in National Assembly: Therefore, something drastic must be done. Due to joblessness, we have seen increment in cases of crime. It has become a disaster in this country. Also, we have seen an increment in cases of suicide out of desperation. If we are going to treat people differently, that will be unacceptable. We have seen employers who in a bid to deter workers from enjoying leaves they fired them. In retrospect, these issues have created unwarranted deaths through suicide or frustrations by families which in return have caused divorce. Therefore, we must, as a country, while looking at our laws in line ... view
