  • 30 Aug 2018 in National Assembly: Hon. Speaker, I also want to bring to the attention of the House that TUCK mentioned a statement about this nominee, Ms. Ashubwe. A letter, which talks about that, is in the House. It will be presented before us. Through its Secretary-General, Hon. Wilson Sossion, conferred and agreed with COTU that this should be the nominee of the trade unions in Kenya. I talk authoritatively as a person who comes from that particular background. The communication we have been given about the Petition that complains about Ms. Ashubwe was communicated by the Chair of TUCK. In the understanding of the ... view

  • 30 Aug 2018 in National Assembly: suffice. He agreed in totality with COTU that Ms. Ashubwe is the nominee for trade unions. Therefore, I find no reason why the Committee Chair, who is not listening, accepted a communication from the chair, but not from the secretary-general of the union. That was faulty because unions do not communicate through their chairmen. Therefore, I beg this House that we amend this Report to approve the nomination of Ms. Ashubwe for appointment as Commissioner of the SRC. view

  • 30 Aug 2018 in National Assembly: Thank you, Hon. Temporary Deputy Chairman. I think at this pace, the chair should also observe all other amendments which he is importing into this Finance Bill so that we do not waste the House’s time. view
  • 29 Aug 2018 in National Assembly: Hon. Temporary Deputy Chairman, first of all, I want to indicate to the House that the Chair is misleading the House by indicating that this issue was put to public participation where workers’ unions were involved. I approached the Chair of the Committee and he agreed with me in person that the teachers of Kenya were not consulted in so far as these deductions are concerned. view
  • 29 Aug 2018 in National Assembly: Those are workers who form the biggest chunk of the contributors of that fund. If anything, the fund so created has not been given money in a structured way. So, the workers of Kenya and, more so, the teachers, will not be willing to allow their money to be deducted and put in a fund where they are not represented, and they do not know what that money is going to be used for. The teachers of Kenya already have existing housing funds. This will be a duplication of the same process. The amendment has not been allowed by the ... view
  • 29 Aug 2018 in National Assembly: Thank you very much, Hon. Temporary Deputy Chairman, for this opportunity. I want to draw the attention of the House to the fact that this is the same amendment that we have rejected, but it is being brought back in a different way. Therefore, I want to alert the House that it is the same donkey painted in a different colour. It is the same amendment that wants to deduct employees’ salaries by 1.5 per cent. In so doing, it is also asking employers to pay up to Kshs5,000 for each employee. The impact of this is that most employers ... view
  • 29 Aug 2018 in National Assembly: Hon. Temporary Deputy Chairman, thank you. I withdraw this amendment. view
  • 28 Aug 2018 in National Assembly: Thank you, Hon. Speaker. As a teacher and MP for Emuhaya, I must take this opportunity to congratulate you. As a teacher of History and Government, I understand the Commonwealth very well because it is the mother of all the parliamentary systems of the nations that were formerly colonised by Britain. view
