I want to begin by acknowledging the fact that, indeed, ranking encourages competition, inculcates a sense of competition and it can be used as a tool for benchmarking. That notwithstanding, in overall terms, ranking does more harm than good. Competition needs to be fair.   • 18 Mar 2015 in National Assembly: Hon. Temporary Deputy Speaker, a total of 2,975 candidates had their results cancelled as a result of cheating. That is what I was saying and the records are there. Hon. Temporary Deputy Speaker, ranking has made students operate like robots in schools. The focus is entirely on completion of the syllabus early enough and then students are drilled to pass exams. This practice should stop if we are to improve the standards of education in our schools.
