  • 23 May 2007 in National Assembly: Mr. Temporary Deputy Speaker, Sir, the number of children thin out as they get to Standard VIII because of lack of facilities. The girls mostly drop out of school because, when they reach their maturity stage, the parents are not able to afford the materials that they require. Last year, for example, 643,000 students sat the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams. Only 50 per cent of those students were admitted to secondary schools. Many of the secondary schools where those students were admitted might not have the required facilities. The Form IV students who sat for the Kenya ... view
  • 23 May 2007 in National Assembly: Mr. Temporary Deputy Speaker, Sir, out of the 260,000 students who sat the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examinations (KCSE) last year, only 63,000 got C plus and above. Out of this 63,000, only 3.8 per cent would most likely gain entrance to university. In other words, about 50,000 will be left out. Even when you look at the figure of 3.8 per cent of the 63,000, most likely very few of those students will join universities. There are many reasons why the universities do not have the capacity to accommodate all the 60,000 students. Mr. Temporary Deputy Speaker, Sir, the ... view
  • 26 Apr 2007 in National Assembly: Ahsante sana, Bw.
  • 17 Apr 2007 in National Assembly: Mr. Speaker, Sir, I beg to give notice of the following Motion:- THAT, aware of the important role that education plays in the development of any country; noting with great concern that admission to under-graduate courses at public universities has become extremely competitive for thousands of students who attain minimum qualifications for admission, yet end up being shut out of university education; taking cognisance of the fact that students who come from marginalised areas are the most disadvantaged in that respect; thereby reinforcing the marginalisation of such areas; this House urges the Government to urgently consider: Equipping schools in marginalised ... view
  • 22 Mar 2007 in National Assembly: Asante, Bw.
  • 23 Nov 2006 in National Assembly: Thank you, Mr. Temporary Deputy Speaker, Sir. I also would like to add my voice to what has already been said. I wish to take this opportunity to congratulate Dr. Ojiambo for November 23, 2006 PARLIAMENTARY DEBATES 3935 a job well done. The Nutritionists and Dieticians Bill is long overdue. Many diseases affecting the citizens of this country can be avoided if we eat the right foods. We think that the rich have access to a balanced diet. This is not true because all of us can access the right foods. In the rural areas, for example, we find many ... view
  • 16 Nov 2006 in National Assembly: Thank you, Mr. Temporary Deputy Speaker, Sir. I want to add my voice by saying that this country requires a tobacco regulatory body, so that certain issues are looked into. It is important for us, as Kenyans, to have our home-grown law which will regulate the tobacco industry. I know it is easy for hon. Members to say that we have been left behind in regulating tobacco use by other countries. However, when we look at the percentage of smokers in our country, they are actually very few. This is simply because when we were growing up we were told ... view
  • 18 Jul 2006 in National Assembly: Ahsante Bw. Itakuaje barabara ya kiwango "A" itengewe Kshs4 million pekee.
