Rt. Hon.(Eng) Raila Amolo Odinga

Raila Odinga served as Prime Minister of Kenya, and was the MP of Langata between 1992 and March 2013. He came third in the 1997 Presidential election and as ODM candidate was runner up to Mwai Kibaki in the 2007 Presidential Election. In 2013 he unsuccessfully contested the Presidential elections that saw Uhuru Kenyatta declared the 4th President. In 2017 he successfully contested the August 8th polls that saw the Supreme Court nullify the elections. He nonetheless absconded the fresh October 26th polls that saw President Uhuru re-elected for another final term.

I held discussions with the former US President, Bill Clinton, whose foundation is already working with my office to support the Mau Forest Rehabilitation Programme.   • 25 May 2011 in National Assembly: Mr. Temporary Deputy Speaker, Sir, on 12th April this year, I visited the White House and held discussions with the Vice-President, Joe Bidden. We reviewed the Kenya-US bilateral relationship, discussed issues of mutual interest with regard to Somalia, Southern Sudan, Libya and Cote d’ Ivoire. The US committed US$15 million to assist Kenyan border patrol. The subject was on democracy and governance in Africa. I explored the emerging challenges of elections without democracy in Africa. The dialogue was very illuminating. view
  • 25 May 2011 in National Assembly: Mr. Temporary Deputy Speaker, Sir, I also met with members of the Corporate Council on Africa to discuss how the US should increase its investments in Kenya. I was also able to brief the US Congressional Black Caucus on evolving political and economic trends in Kenya. I was also privileged to be invited to the premier of Freedom Rights, a movie produced by a Kenyan based on our very own Madam Daphne Sheldrick’s work with our elephants. view
  • 25 May 2011 in National Assembly: Mr. Temporary Deputy Speaker, Sir, on April 14th, I visited Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) and witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding with our Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology and, through that agreement, Jaramogi Institute of Advanced Technology will get assistance in setting up a school of nursing and a faculty of agricultural engineering. Member for Cherengany wanted to know the content of the agreement that we signed with the French Government and whether the agreement included a military component. I would like to assure the hon. Member that the agreement that we signed had nothing to do with the military. In fact, the agreement that was signed between the Kenya Government and the French Government was signed by the Minister for Energy jointly with his French counterpart. Member to understand that when Government officials travel abroad, bookings are done by Kenyan embassies and High Commissions abroad. Bookings are not done by the Prime Minister. We do not choose. I stayed at a hotel called Astoria Hotel in New York. That is where most delegates who visit the United Nations in New York stay. Even three years ago when I was there, I stayed there.
