Sabina Chege is a woman of many talents and used to be an actor at Kenya National Theatre. She served as a radio presenter for many years where she addressed development and women issues. Transforming people is her passion.

Temporary Deputy Chairman, I beg to move: THAT, the Pharmacy and Poisons Act, Cap 244 be further amended in the proposed new section 3B− (i) by deleting the proposed amendment to subsection (1); (ii) by deleting the proposed amendment to subsection (2); This amendment seeks to retain the current provision as contained in the Bill to provide for the function of the board in the regulation of health products. The definition of the term “health product” is more comprehensive than that of the term “pharmaceutical products”.

This is in line with the previous amendments where there is a consequential amendment that ensures that the name of Council changes from “the Kenya Medical and Dental Council” to “the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council”.

I have said this amendment is to remove the error previously providing that the chairperson of the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council must be a specialist medical or dental practitioner with a degree in medicine. Since the amended Section 2 of the Act now provides for the definition of a specialist medical practitioner or dentist as a person who has completed post-graduate training in medicine or dentistry, it will be sufficient to have the qualification of the chairperson simply as a specialist – a medical or dental practitioner of good standing.
