We considered this matter but we felt very strongly that it should remain; the reason being that if you delete it, it will be inconsistent with Clause 73 which we have already passed. Temporary Deputy Chairman, I beg to move:- THAT, Clause 86 be amended in Sub-clause (1) by— (a) deleting the words “five years” appearing immediately after the words “a term not exceeding” and substituting therefore the words “two years”; and (b) deleting the words “one million” and substituting therefore the words “two million”. The reason the Committee felt that this Clause should be amended is because, if you lock up someone for five years because of issues of marriage, it is too cruel.
