  • 20 Apr 2023 in National Assembly: Sexual harassment and abuse are heinous crimes that cause immense harm to the victims, particularly women. These actions are forms of violence that violates the person’s autonomy and dignity. They can have long lasting physical and psychological consequences or impact. As it has been said here, it is ravaging many homes in our country. Sexual harassment is another form of gender-based violence. It involves unwanted sexual advances, comments, gestures or physical contact. It seems as if we have accepted this as normal behaviour. Denigration of women, including objectification, belittling and disrespect, also perpetuates harmful gender stereotypes and reinforces unequal power ... view
  • 20 Apr 2023 in National Assembly: Another aspect of this is negative masculinity that often plays out in perpetuating these harms. These are traditional ideas about what it means to be a man. The idea that a man should be dominant, aggressive and sexually assertive can also fuel a sense of entitlement that contributes to sexual abuse and harassment. We also need to fight this type of traditional behaviour and empower young boys. We should train and educate them in schools about aspects that will reinforce the fact that they do not need to be involved in toxic masculinity but can become men who support their ... view
  • 20 Apr 2023 in National Assembly: Sexual abuse and harassment, and the denigration of women are the serious social problems that have profound impacts on individuals and society. We must work to challenge harmful gender stereotypes and promote the culture that respects bodily autonomy, gender equality and human dignity. I also condemn the despicable acts that we have recently seen on social media in the last few days where the privacy of women is violated. • 20 Apr 2023 in National Assembly: actions that we must all condemn. The media must not be used as an outlet to demonise and stigmatise our women. We must reject the invasion of one’s private affairs which the public has no legitimate concern or wrongful intrusion into one’s private activities in such manner as to outrage or cause mental suffering, shame or humiliation to a person of ordinary sensibilities. Our society must have zero tolerance to all kinds of stigmatisation, demonisation and objectification of women. view
  • 20 Apr 2023 in National Assembly: Enough is enough. It is time for our menfolk to stand with our women. The time is now. Thank you, Hon. Temporary Speaker. view
  • 22 Mar 2023 in National Assembly: Yes, they are related. First, this is a matter of great concern. This issue of sexual harassment is currently a global concern. Those cases were detailed on the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) documentary Panorama . It has become a major concern for the two British corporations involved in this matter. view
  • 22 Mar 2023 in National Assembly: In addition to that, Hon. Speaker, in a Statement, I did state that there is lack of sufficient response to Questions and Statements by the various ministries that we have highlighted here. It is a topic of serious worry. Cabinet Secretaries seem to ignore this House. For example, from October, I have asked not less than five Statements and I have not received a single answer to The electronic version of the Official Hansard Report is for information purposesonly. • 22 Mar 2023 in National Assembly: them. Some are now outdated. They were urgent then. I had inquired for your guidance on how we could solve this challenge. I notice in the House that many of the Questions or Statements are not answered to the satisfaction of the Members of Parliament yet, there is no possibility to interrogate and engage the Cabinet Secretary directly or in committee sessions. The point is: Why would we ask Questions if the other side is not taking them with the seriousness that is required? Therefore, I am asking for your guidance on that. view

  • 14 Mar 2023 in National Assembly: Thank you, Hon. Speaker, for giving me this opportunity. I want to thank Hon. Machua from Kiambu for bringing this particular Motion to Parliament. First of all, I want to pass my condolences to the family of Grace Onyango, a remarkable trailblazer who had scored so many firsts in her political activities. Having grown up and gone to school in South Nyanza, I am proud of her achievements in Kisumu: first as a Mayor and later as a Member of Parliament. In fact, if you look at her record, you will see that she was a woman of high achievement. ... view
