Dr. Agnes Zani

From her childhood days, she recalls that any kind of injustice to anyone made her hair stand on end. At the university, Agnes occasionally acted as the chairperson of her department and started the Ford Foundation International Fellowships Alumni Programme, which she has been chairing since. When Kwale residents threatened to boycott the 2013 elections during the infamous “Pwani si Kenya” unrest, she took it upon herself to offer free civic education to her community. Education tops the former lecturer of University of Nairobi main agenda during her term of service.

  • 2 Dec 2015 in Senate: Sen. Wetangula says it is big money. I hope they rot using that money. I hope they are not even able to use it successfully. It is just the whole story. I sympathise with this Committee. Sen. Kittony, it must have been a lot of hard work for this Committee because the contradictions are just enormous. I think I like the way you have put your Committee observations reflecting the level of confusion that was there. There is need to move forward so that they can move on with what they need to do. The parents agreed with the hospital ... view
  • 2 Dec 2015 in Senate: Mr. Temporary Speaker, Sir, we need clarity. What is written in the newspapers is a reality of what is happening. Sen. Muthama said that “the newspapers have said.” Whether or not it will be verified is totally a different process. As a society, we can have that discourse. There is a lot that is happening and people are questioning. Some people are questioning the way certificates are attained. Some of them are fake and have been attained from other institutions. These are the realities. We have been in academia and we have dealt with this. We need to deal with ... view
  • 2 Dec 2015 in Senate: Mr. Temporary Speaker, Sir, the point of order is that, he is reporting what the media has said. He has not said that there is such a university. Therefore, he can not substantiate by having to name it. view
  • 12 Nov 2015 in Senate: Hurray to women! Madam Temporary Speaker, thank you for bringing this Motion from IPU. It is great to know that they are supporting our initiative to achieve the two-thirds gender rule which has been more theoretical than practical over time. We know that she comes from the socio-cultural background that most of us come from. However, I am happy that more women are able to stand up and be counted and face up to the challenges of being leaders. We have our history and examples for the same. We need to change the way we socialize our children and re-orientate ... view
  • 10 Nov 2015 in Senate: Madam Temporary Speaker, the KNEC was set up in 1980 to focus on Kenyan examination matters. What existed previously was the East African Examinations Council (EAEC). At that point, it was about examinations in terms of accuracy of presentation of the results and reliability and validity of those results. That was the key mandate of KNEC. That Act was later replaced by Act No.29 of 2012, repealing the previous Cap.225 Act of 1980 trying to make sure that the KNEC becomes a stronger unit. It has already been mentioned by other Senators that the idea was to make sure, for ... view
  • 17 Sep 2015 in Senate: They are all my names in the correct order. Mr. Speaker, Sir, I just want to stand in solidarity with these petitioners on this Petition that has come from Kwale County that is on a very key and important issue. We wonder, especially in the light of having bodies like NEMA, for example, and the extent to which residents and communities still have to suffer because of exploitation of resources in those counties. Whereas we know, through exploitation of those resources, there should be gain, what we are seeing more and more is the flouting of specific provisions that have ... view
  • 29 Jul 2015 in Senate: Thank you, Madam Temporary Speaker, for recognizing women Senators in this House. We rarely get such accolades and we need them more often. We assert ourselves in this House and continue to do our duties diligently as Senators. Two or three days ago while in Mombasa for our meeting with Members of County Assemblies (MCAs), my son sent me a message saying that there were hailstones in Nairobi. I told him that it was impossible. I asked him to send me a photograph of what he was talking about. On looking at it, it looked like snow. I told him ... view
  • 29 Jul 2015 in Senate: On a point of order, Madam Temporary Speaker. Is it in order for Sen. Elachi to talk about the National Assembly and Parliament? She should have said the National Assembly and the Senate so that we do not give a wrong impression because she is talking about a critical point of the Bill being subjected to both Houses. I think she wanted to highlight the Senate and the National Assembly. view
  • 29 Jul 2015 in Senate: Madam Temporary Speaker, was the Senator in order to allude that the National Assembly and the Senate are inclusive? I think she wanted to allude to the National Assembly and the Senate rather than the National Assembly and Parliament. view
