Dr. Agnes Zani

From her childhood days, she recalls that any kind of injustice to anyone made her hair stand on end. At the university, Agnes occasionally acted as the chairperson of her department and started the Ford Foundation International Fellowships Alumni Programme, which she has been chairing since. When Kwale residents threatened to boycott the 2013 elections during the infamous “Pwani si Kenya” unrest, she took it upon herself to offer free civic education to her community. Education tops the former lecturer of University of Nairobi main agenda during her term of service.

  • 16 Jun 2015 in Senate: Thank you, Mr. Speaker, Sir. Cancer has become a number one killer. I support this Petition, but specifically to look at the inconsistencies in diagnosis. There are many cases of people who have assumed to have been cured, but when they go to other countries like India, they are actually discovered with advanced states of cancer. We should investigate and find out whether the problem is on the part of the human resources or the part of the machines that we are using. When cancer is detected early enough, it leads to a quick cure. Thank you. view
  • 16 Jun 2015 in Senate: Mr. Speaker, Sir, I would like to address Mr. Kiprono Rop’s Petition. If you could allow me to just make a few comments. First, I would like to thank this Kenyan who is really thinking about how to make sure that the two-thirds rule is adhered to within the Constitution. We are pooling efforts together from different formulas and formulations, so that we can actually find a way forward. A technical group from the Gender and Equality Commission that has been working on this has made quite a lot of progress in terms of making a determination. The idea that ... view

  • 16 Jun 2015 in Senate: Mr. Speaker, Sir, sometimes the buttons are not as effective as the voice. Is it in order to request that you also make a ruling on the two thirds-gender rule and which Committee it is going to be directed to? view
  • 16 Jun 2015 in Senate: Mr. Temporary Speaker, Sir, I stand to support the County Allocation of Revenue Bill, 2015. This is a very important Bill that we have to pass as the Senate that gives allocations for the counties. Most counties are looking forward to this allocation in terms of progress so that they can move on with the work that they are doing within the various counties. Mr. Temporary Speaker, Sir, the equitable share of revenue raised that is being shared is Kshs259 billion together with conditional funds that amount to almost Kshs21 billion. As has been said by other speakers before me, ... view
  • 15 Jun 2015 in Senate: Mr. Speaker, Sir, bicameralism has been adopted very successfully in various parts of the world in developing and developed countries. We have had an example from Sen. (Dr.) Khalwale of Poland. In the United States of America (USA), there is a House of Representatives and a House of Commons. They have devised ways of working and they have worked very effectively. Even on budgeting matters, there is no situation where only one committee of either House works on the budget alone. They get together as a joint committee. Moving forward, that is one of the recommendations I would want to ... view
