Dr. Agnes Zani

From her childhood days, she recalls that any kind of injustice to anyone made her hair stand on end. At the university, Agnes occasionally acted as the chairperson of her department and started the Ford Foundation International Fellowships Alumni Programme, which she has been chairing since. When Kwale residents threatened to boycott the 2013 elections during the infamous “Pwani si Kenya” unrest, she took it upon herself to offer free civic education to her community. Education tops the former lecturer of University of Nairobi main agenda during her term of service.

  • 6 Jun 2019 in Senate: I wonder if the students from Chief Mbogori Girls’ Secondary School have seen a video clip of a young lady, Natasha Mwansa, who has stirred the whole world by talking so eloquently at a conference with high level leaders. Miss Mwansa expressed herself so well and highlighted the issues of concern. We need to aspire to get to a position where we can address issues of the society with the vibrancy that such issues require. view
  • 6 Jun 2019 in Senate: Mr. Speaker, Sir, I encourage the students to continue working hard in school and to contextualize many of the issues that they learn with the counties and counties development. The Senate plays the role of making relevant legislation to ensure that devolution works within the counties. view
  • 6 Jun 2019 in Senate: We are happy to have the students here this afternoon. I hope that they will learn a lot on what takes place at the Senate of the Republic of Kenya. The electronic version of the Senate Hansard Report is for information purposesonly. A certified version of this Report can be obtained from the Hansard Editor, Senate. view

  • 4 Jun 2019 in Senate: Thank you, Mr. Speaker, Sir. I start by wishing my Muslim brothers and sisters an Eid Mubarak after a month of fasting. I wish that God’s graces from Allah land on them. Secondly, I welcome the students from St. Mary’s School which is near your neighbourhood and Sen. Wetangula’s county. I would like to comment on how smart they look. We have also heard about how smart they are in their academic works. We wish that they will learn a lot this afternoon about what happens in the Senate. When they go back to their counties, they should realise that ... view
  • 4 Jun 2019 in Senate: disconnect. These people who go to this professional body have passed their regular courses. That means that they have done regular courses and have been tested for this. However, when they go for their professional exams, something goes wrong. So, it seems there is a disconnect with the way they have been trained and what they have been learning and when they do the professional exam, they are asked completely different things. Therefore, there is need to audit and find out exactly what the situation might be. Is it high-pitched and, therefore, what they learn from the universities is not ... view
  • 4 Jun 2019 in Senate: Mr. Speaker, Sir, this Petition gives us a good position, situation and chance to be seized of, and understand what is happening. As they do that with the stakeholders, they can begin to address what happens in other sectors. Sen. Farhiya contributed about the CPA and intimated that this seems to have been corrected. How did they go about it? It is important to have the right balance so that we get the right professionals for the different professions that are there in the country. view
  • 4 Jun 2019 in Senate: Thank you, Madam Temporary Speaker. From the onset, I support this Bill. We have been looking forward to it. I also want to congratulate Sen. Kasanga. She has done a good job by alerting us, keeping us focused and interested in this Bill. This Bill addresses something that we all face even as we struggle to be mentally healthy. The Kenya Mental Health Policy 2015-2030 articulates that one out of four people suffer from mental disorder. The range of mental disorder is broad. In this country, for example, we have misdiagnosis because we do not identify with the mental illnesses ... view
  • 4 Jun 2019 in Senate: gender disorders which include paraphilias. We also have people who have gender switch. They think that they are men when they should be women and vice versa. The social cultural context for understanding these disorders is not in place. We do not get into the psychological psyche to understand the reason as to why that person behaves in a certain manner. We do not try to understand if their behaviour is as a result of mutation of their cells neither do we try to understand if they inherited those traits or if what is happening has to do with the ... view
  • 4 Jun 2019 in Senate: Still at the national Government, the standards in health facilities is very clearly stipulated across the Bill. At the county, level there are very key issues such as resources. There is also the issue of rehabilitation and how to create rehabilitation programmes that will be helpful. There are the issues of having county programmes and following them, targeting risk groups, identification of those groups and dealing with them in advance and well sourced professionals. There is the issue of research data that keeps coming up over and over again. Whether or not the numbers will be accurate, will depend on ... view
