  • 16 Dec 2015 in National Assembly: which surveys and allocates people land. However, the sane offices go out of their way to demarcate swamps, riparian areas and river beds. Once people are allocated such pieces of land, in the absence of a law prohibiting them from destroying that ecosystem, they will go ahead and cultivate the land, saying: “This is my farm and I can do anything with it”. However with this law in place, I strongly believe that even if you are near a river bed, or next to a forest, or even in your own farm; there will be limitations on usage of such ... view
  • 16 Dec 2015 in National Assembly: is no water. We are crying on a daily basis that there is no water and yet we are the ones who destroy our environment and forest cover. This can be very dangerous for future generations. Therefore, this Bill will go a long way to mitigate forest degradation. I would encourage the Board, once the law is put in place, to have people on the ground. They should establish a database of the forest cover that we have in this country. They should also work out the percentage of the forest cover and develop a plan on how each year ... view
  • 3 Dec 2015 in National Assembly: Thank you, Hon. Speaker for giving me this opportunity to ventilate a little on this particular petition by my sister, Hon. Kajuju. Our people have suffered a lot and this has been a perennial problem. Wildlife-human conflict in Meru has become a thorn in the flesh. Animals not only damage crops, but they also kill people. There is a corridor which joins the Meru National Park to the Mount ... view

First and foremost, I would say that conservation of wetlands is a very important aspect of our environment. It is to conserve our ecosystem. Conservation of most of our wetlands or the riparian areas can enable us get water and balance dry and wet areas because this has become a problem. This is as result of many people who have been demarcating our land - especially land officers - who have been allocating those wetlands ... view
  • 3 Dec 2015 in National Assembly: There is also a disconnect between the county governments’ role in management of those wetlands and the Ministry of Environment, Water and Natural Resource and especially the departments that are created by the Government in the ministries like WRMA and Tana and Athi River Development Authority (TARDA). They collect money from the water users and water committees, but we do not see their action. We do not see them on the ground putting back that money to conserve those areas so that people can get more water. It appears that money is collected and it is not properly accounted for. ... view

  • 2 Dec 2015 in National Assembly: Hon. Temporary Deputy Chairlady, I support the amendment, but I am not very comfortable with Clause 17 (1)(f) that seeks to insert a new paragraph that states “engaging in active politics”. view
