  • 13 Nov 2019 in National Assembly: Thank you, Hon. Temporary Deputy Speaker. On 12th June 2019, this House made an amendment to the National Cohesion and Integration Act. Under Section 17(1), the amendment clearly states that in terms of composition, the Commission shall consist of (a), a chairperson appointed by the President and approved by the National assembly in accordance with the First Schedule. (b) Seven commissioners nominated by the President and approved by the National Assembly. Therefore, the total number is eight in accordance to amendment No.6 of 2019. view

The approval of this particular Motion has generated a lot of interest. As you have realised, almost all the Members feel that they should contribute. view

  • 13 Nov 2019 in National Assembly: of them. One of the key issues was legal, which I will bring out. It is important for Members to know that we approved the new Act in June 2019, which is an amendment of the National Cohesion and Integration Act of 2008. We made substantial changes in this amendment. One of the most important changes was on the procedure for appointment, including the number of commissioners. According to the new Act, we have eight members: seven members plus one Chairperson. view
  • 13 Nov 2019 in National Assembly: The other change which was very important is what was raised during the initial attempt by the Select Committee on National Cohesion and Equal Opportunity of this House. It had the powers to interview the commissioners. However, a member of the public challenged that process of interview and said that Parliament is empowered to vet but not conduct the interview process. Then this Act now provided for a selection panel which the Cabinet Secretary (CS) responsible will constitute. Upon the selection and interview, the process continues. view
