  • 21 Dec 2020 in Senate: Mr. Speaker, Sir, let us not mince words. Things do not just happen. Why are tea and coffee farmers in the desperate situation? Why have tea and coffee farmers been impoverished? Why are the dairy industry farmers not getting real returns? Kenya must relook at itself. If we were growing fruits, tea, or maize in large quantities in the midst of COVID-19 pandemic, we would be selling and doing well. However, our economy is hard hit. We need to relook at agriculture if we have to make any meaningful gains to farmers in this country. This is a great day ... view
  • 21 Dec 2020 in Senate: Thank you, Madam Deputy Speaker. I stand to remember our colleague, Sen. (Dr.) Kabaka. Sen. (Dr.) Kabaka always came out as a very humorous person who seemed to wish everybody well. It was not just a casual thing for him to say that even if Machakos was getting more money, he could not agree with that, if his brothers and sisters in Makueni and Kitui were not getting. I remember at one time asking him jokingly why that had to be. He was so convinced and convicted. I want to tell his people that they had a selfless leader and ... view

  • 1 Dec 2020 in Senate: Mr. Speaker, Sir, I would like to support this Petition by Sen. Seneta. There are many Kenyans being defrauded and swindled. Therefore, I would like the Committee of the Senate which will handle this to come up with thorough and serious recommendations. The ghost in the country is corruption. The kinds of issues that Sen. Seneta has brought are all over. People are innocently defrauded. I call upon this House to come up with serious recommendation regarding the action that should be taken. The Maasai people are well endowed with land. However, it is a pity to see some people ... view
  • 1 Dec 2020 in Senate: laws and proposals, but it will be a futile attempt. Therefore, this Petition should be taken seriously. I support Sen. Seneta. view
  • 10 Nov 2020 in Senate: Thank you, Mr. Speaker, Sir. Thank you for your cautionary statement though a bit scary, but it is real. It is good you have reminded us. I stand to support Sen. Khaniri on his well-articulated and researched issues on the tea sector. As I stand here, the issue is not just tea. This country needs to relook at itself and retrace its steps. Kenya had a strong economy when we had agriculture as the backbone of this economy. Whatever else we are doing will remain evasive and we are not likely to get the little economic development that we expect. ... view
  • 10 Nov 2020 in Senate: Mr. Speaker, Sir, Sen. Khaniri has clearly come out to articulate the issues in the tea sector. He has rightly - which I support - stated that the issues are not just about tea. There are issues of sugarcane, maize and coffee. I come from a coffee and tea growing area along-side dairy farming. Farmers are the most frustrated lot. Their hard work and interest in farming has led them to total impoverishment. It is a pity that the Government can look at tea farmers, for example, uprooting tea that has been on their farms for over 30 years because ... view
  • 10 Nov 2020 in Senate: should ask ourselves why the USA Government ensures that their milk, maize, wheat and tobacco farmers are guaranteed a certain payment. Mr. Speaker, Sir, I remember President John F. Kennedy beating Richard Nixon when he argued that farmers must be protected and guaranteed a certain minimum payment. This is because a farmer is not actually in charge of supply and demand. A farmer produces when the rain comes. A farmer harvests when the season is right. Today, this country is importing oranges from Egypt and fruits from South Africa. I am calling upon this Government to retrace its steps and ... view
