The Senate should be seen to truly control the presidency. We should be controlling the president when he goes to excess. However, we should we should be seen to survive as a Senate without actual powers.

Thank you, Madam Temporary Speaker, for giving me the opportunity to contribute to this Motion which should have come a long time ago. It is a very important Motion for this country. You realize that the forest cover in Kenya is very small. We are now at six per cent and yet Kenya is a large country.

When one goes to countries like Sweden, Japan and the Netherlands, one wonders what is happening in this country because the forest cover in Sweden is 66 per cent. This is despite the fact that Sweden is a country with less than 10 million people in terms of population while Kenya has only six per cent. We need trees for various reasons such a clean environment and timber. It is a shame for this country, as big as it is with the human resource it has, to be importing timber from Congo, Tanzania and other countries. We have the ability ...

a luxury. It should be made mandatory such that we have adequate trees to take care of those living in this country today and for posterity. Madam Temporary Speaker, it is as a matter of fact to ensure that the areas that we call deserts or semi-deserts in this country have been provided with water either from boreholes, dams or whichever way so that we can grow trees in those places. Mr. Speaker, Sir, I have reluctantly listened because we are living in times when people must be serious. There are a few of us in this country who are going to come out maybe approaching the level of tycoons through the kind of things we hear about. It is wrong to use the word loosely without clarifying whether you mean somebody who is honest and upright, or somebody who is in the dam and all other kind of deals that are going on, which are impoverishing this country.
