Fatuma Ibrahim Ali

Fatuma credits her success to her grandmother who took her to school after her parents separated. She chose to study Agriculture as she believes that only agriculture could alleviate poverty in food insecure Wajir County. Her work at UN Women exposed her to the challenges women face daily, physically and mentally. In 2003 she was appointed a commissioner to the Kenya National Commission for Human Rights (KNCHR) and spearheaded the release of a report faulting the government’s IDP’s resettlement exercise (Operation Rudi Nyumbani). Fatuma is passionate about girl child education and seeks to ensure none of the girls in Wajir lacks education due to financial constraints.

  • 23 Nov 2016 in National Assembly: Thank you, Hon. Temporary Deputy Speaker. I almost gave up, but thank you for allowing me to contribute. First and foremost, I want to support this Bill. I want to recognise Hon. Neto for walking through this Bill. I want to confirm that some time in 1993, I worked for a while in the refugee The electronic version of the Official Hansard Report is for information purposesonly. • 23 Nov 2016 in National Assembly: camp that Hon. Shidiye has described. This Bill is very comprehensive. It has a series of progressive provisions. People do not become refugees by choice, but circumstances force them. Nobody chooses to be a refugee because it is not a good way of living. People are forced out of their countries. You can imagine yourself as a Kenyan with a very established business and property - I pray it does not happen to us - and one day you are forced to leave your country because of fear, persecution, death and other threats. We need to internalise the fact that ... view
  • 23 Nov 2016 in National Assembly: security and support to recognised refugees. Sometimes, there are limitations on the part of the country. The other thing currently happening is the forceful repatriation of refugees. Under law, refugees should volunteer to go back home. They should not be forced. They should be given enough information that the place they are being taken to is safe, secure and they can return without any problem. I neighbour refugee camps because I represent Wajir County and I have witnessed that refugees are given ultimatums to go back to their countries. We know Somalia is very unstable. Security cannot be guaranteed. People ... view
  • 25 Oct 2016 in National Assembly: Thank you, Hon. Deputy Speaker for giving me the opportunity to contribute to this Bill. At the outset, I want to oppose it. I have been a sad mother and Member of Parliament for the last four years that the issue of two-thirds gender actualisation has been debated. • 25 Oct 2016 in National Assembly: Hon. Speaker, the Leader of the Majority Party has said that they are doing a reverse. In my view, in terms of achieving the two-thirds gender principle, Kenya has reversed 100 years. Kenya is a signatory to many international instruments that require this country to achieve gender equality. Progressive realisation of the two-thirds gender principle is nothing. It is just a game. It is just like a sentence in a book. It is just meant to cheat Kenyan men and women. Hon. Midiwo said that gender is not just about women. We all know that gender is about men and ... view
  • 25 Oct 2016 in National Assembly: Hon. Deputy Speaker, please protect me from Hon. Kajwang’. He is not a friend to his women voters. Kenyan women should watch this debate and vote out men like Hon. Kajwang’, who oppose their progress. Kenyan women are sad because we are humiliated in this House on a daily basis. What do you expect outside Parliament? What women go through outside this House is worse. I oppose this Bill in totality. view
  • 19 Oct 2016 in National Assembly: Thank you, Hon. Temporary Deputy Speaker, for giving me this opportunity. First, I appreciate Hon. Nooru for bringing this timely Motion. I have just come from Wajir today at around midday. I was in the field yesterday until 8.00 p.m. trying to see the situation. The situation is really bad. When a national disaster happens or when a national concern is raised, the defined functions of counties and the national Government cease to operate. I want to confirm here that the Wajir County Government is trying to support this process of cushioning livestock farmers and families which are affected. The ... view
  • 19 Oct 2016 in National Assembly: that because it is a national function. What shocks me in this country is that we are dealing with reactive interventions instead of putting in place a well laid out intervention to cushion livestock farmers and people who are always affected by drought. We know that drought is a natural phenomenon, but we can prevent deaths and sufferings of citizen. We cannot say we are prepared to protect citizens from suffering. You should see women and children struggling in those affected counties. Sometimes you wonder who will rescue them and safeguard their lives. Sometimes when you see the suffering in ... view
  • 1 Sep 2016 in National Assembly: Thank you, Hon. Temporary Deputy Chairlady. I support Hon. Chepkong’a’s amendment. Gender is a constitutional matter. We are overhauling the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Bill and I support. This will be very unfair to the men and women of this country if we drop this amendment proposed by the Chairman of the Departmental Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs. Kenyans are watching us. I support it. Thank you, Hon. Temporary Deputy Chairlady. view
