Florence Kajuju

Florence was at one point the vice chairperson of Law Society of Kenya (LSK). During her campaigns she overcame all odds to win against the strong Alliance Party of Kenya (APK) wave in her backyard. The impetus to seek a platform to represent the people of Meru was created by the pro bono cases she undertook in the years she practiced law in Meru.

  • 29 Nov 2016 in National Assembly: Thank you, Hon. Temporary Deputy Speaker, for this opportunity to contribute to this Bill, which I fully support. It is a very progressive Bill as far as land laws are concerned, taking into account that we are trying to harmonise three different sets of land laws, namely, the Land Act, the Land Registration Act and the very important Prevention, Protection and Assistance to Internally Displaced Persons and Affected Communities Act. One of the important things I have noted in these amendments is that they introduce terms that are very important in law like “just compensation, prompt and full compensation”. In ... view
  • 29 Nov 2016 in National Assembly: This is a very important Bill because it has established a tribunal. The tribunal is very important and I would like Kenyans to know that they have an opportunity to go before it. In Clause 18, which establishes the tribunal, the tribunal has been given jurisdiction to entertain matters that the NLC has not responded to. We have criminalised the acts of corruption that can be committed by persons who are transacting business in the tribunal or any other place where land matters are concerned. I had very many issues to contribute to this Bill and I may not be ... view
  • 29 Nov 2016 in National Assembly: able to have the time to do that. I strongly feel that this is a Bill that we should support taking into account the issues that have been raised in it. view
  • 29 Nov 2016 in National Assembly: Lastly, with your indulgence, I would like to state that we have a problem in our Judiciary where the Land and Environment Courts are not enough. Judges who are sent to various courts to finalise matters on land are not enough and they have not done their work as they are supposed to. The other day in Meru County, the Meru Bar Association threatened to go on strike because the Land and Environment Court has only one judge. They need more judges because there are so many cases. I, therefore, ask the Judiciary to appoint more judges in the Land ... view
  • 27 Oct 2016 in National Assembly: Thank you, Hon. Temporary Deputy Chairlady. I rise to support the amendment by the Committee and state that it is important for a person nominated by the CoG to be brought on board in this arrangement. As it has been said, agriculture is devolved and we know expertise will be required in this process. view
  • 27 Oct 2016 in National Assembly: I also note that the Committee is more gender sensitive than the Departmental Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs where I sit chaired by Hon. Chepkong’a. This is because this amendment does not talk about a progressive approach. It goes direct to the point by saying that gender balance must be realised. Therefore, I do not think that the thinking of the Departmental Committee on Agriculture, Livestock and Cooperatives is in tandem with the thinking of Hon. Chepkong’a with all the respect I have for him. I also like the fact that it reflects diversity and takes into account that ... view

  • 27 Oct 2016 in National Assembly: Hon. Temporary Deputy Speaker, allow me to, first of all, correct my very learned Chairman and Senior Counsel in the profession in which we profess. My reservations have always been noted as far as the use of the word “progressive” is concerned in reference to the gender provision. I hope that he shall apologise and withdraw in due course. We oppose that Bill and we believe it is going to fail. I second the Motion and pray that it be accepted by this House. I also thank the Committee Members who have worked tirelessly to ensure that everything that relates ... view
