Gladys grew up in a political family. Her father the late John Nyasuna, was a councillor and chairperson of Kisumu County Council. Gladys emulated him and developed interest in politics at an early age. In 2003, when at Kenyatta University she became the first female to be elected as the Secretary General of the Student’s Union. After University she remained active in politics and engaged in ODM party politics while still working in LVCT Health. In her term of service, she seeks empowerment of women and youth and education for the girl child. In parliament, Gladys spearheaded the formation of the Information and Public Communication committee.

It is less costly to self-regulate because the media have to pay themselves. We were talking earlier on about a rising wage bill and the Government needing more resources saved. It is cost-effective for the media to self-regulate.

If we pass this Bill as it is we will bring the media under heavy Government regulation, in my view. If that is the case, we might as well change the Memorandum of Objects and Reasons of this Bill and say that this Bill is intended to get the Government control the media or have a strong hand in the media. Section 9 says clearly that after carrying out interviews, the selection panel shall select three persons qualified to be appointed as chairperson and 12 persons qualified to be members of the Council and forward the names to the Cabinet ...

Thank you hon. Speaker, Sir. I am happy that the Kenya Heroes Bill that seeks to recognize the heroes of this country is going to be fast-tracked. I do hope that this Bill is fast-tracked so that we can recognize our heroes, including our sportsmen. Our sportsmen, who have exemplified themselves such as Gor Mahia Football Club, are in the Gallery today. They are the Kenya Premier League Champions, 2013.

Recently, we adopted a report in this House by the Departmental Committee on Education, Research and Technology that showed that the Committees of this House have teeth and are biting.
