21 Jan 2009 in National Assembly:
Mr. Speaker, Sir, I want to inform the hon. Member that Rwambwa Health Centre was one of the three deserving health centres that were recommended for upgrading to sub-district hospitals. Since Ting' Wangi health centre nearer to Siaya District Hospital, which is only seven kilometres away, it was felt that some other two health centres, that is, Akala and Ukwala were more deserving for upgrading based on work-load, distance to the nearest Government of Kenya (GOK) hospital and administrative division.

Mr. Speaker, Sir, I beg to reply as follows. (a) The male and female patients cannot share a ward as indicated by the hon. Member for Makueni. Kitise Health Centre has two wards. The male patients use one ward which is smaller while the female patients and children use the bigger one which is enough for the two groups to share. (b) The big ward will be sub-divided to create a third one and my Ministry has instructed the District Medical Officer of Health, Makueni District, to forward the cost estimate for this sub- division.

Mr. Speaker, Sir, I beg to reply. (a) I am not aware that male and female patients share a ward at Kitise Health Centre, but I am aware that the male and female wards are partitioned. It is one block that has been partitioned to separate males from females. (b) My Ministry is in the process of sourcing for funds from the Treasury to put up an additional ward facility at Kitise Health Centre.
