  • 9 Jul 2008 in National Assembly: Thank you, Mr. Temporary Deputy Speaker, Sir. In supporting this Motion, I want to plead with my colleague, the Minister for Public Health and Sanitation, to note that we have one of the best products to control mosquitoes; pyrethrin and pyrethroid. This product is 1724 PARLIAMENTARY DEBATES July 9, 2008 organic in nature and widely available in our country. The Pyrethrum Board of Kenya has not paid farmers for a very long time. Subsequently, production of pyrethrum has dropped. Instead of spending billions of shillings to buy mosquito nets and other things--- I suspect that we are turning malaria control ... view
  • 1 Jul 2008 in National Assembly: asked the Minister for Environment and Mineral Resources:- (a) whether he is aware that Lake Naivasha is on the verge of extinction as a result of soil erosion and excessive illegal farming around the lake, causing soil erosion at an alarming rate; and, (b) what action the Government is taking to urgently rehabilitate the lake and protect it from extinction. view
  • 1 Jul 2008 in National Assembly: Thank you, Mr. Temporary Deputy Speaker, Sir. I thank the Assistant Minister for taking this Question a bit more seriously this time. Having said that, I heard him say that NEMA is doing regular inspections. They have also said people who have done constructions below the 30-metre mark will be dealt with. Could we know from the Assistant Minister when he will issue a notice particularly to one gentleman who constructed a house right inside the lake? When does he intend to start the rehabilitation of the areas where they have removed the people? Mr. Temporary Deputy Speaker, Sir, while ... view
  • 1 Jul 2008 in National Assembly: Mr. Temporary Deputy Speaker, Sir, Farmers Choice sprang up because the Uplands Bacon Factory failed. Farmers Choice is a monopoly. What this means, if it is true that the Farmers Choice has taken over the Uplands Bacon Factory, is that we have sanctioned a monopoly in this country. These farmers are suffering, and we should hear a more affirmative answer. Even if it is going to be sold, even to the local co-operatives, that is okay, but we should not strengthen a monopoly. view
  • 25 Jun 2008 in National Assembly: Mr. Speaker, Sir, I beg to give notice of the following Motion:- THAT, acknowledging the gallant and selfless efforts by the Mau Mau fighters in June 25, 2008 PARLIAMENTARY DEBATES 1393 the liberation of the country from the British colonialists; further aware that these war veterans are in their sunset years and living in the most dehumanizing conditions and absolute poverty; this House urges the Government to consider allocating a minimum of 2.5 acres of arable land and any additional humanitarian assistance to every authenticated Mau Mau veteran as a token of appreciation for their role in bringing Independence to ... view
  • 25 Jun 2008 in National Assembly: Mr. Speaker, Sir, I beg to ask the Minister for Foreign Affairs the following Question by Private Notice. (a) Is the Minister aware that on 12th June, 2008, Messrs. Peter Chege Kimanga, Patrick Gachibi Njuguna and John Mburu Mbuthia, who were traders, were killed, burnt and buried in shallow graves in Mwanza Region in Tanzania? (b) What steps has the Government taken to ensure that the bodies are exhumed and brought home for a decent burial? (c) What steps has the Government taken to ensure the Tanzanian Government makes full compensation for the deaths to their families? (d) Could the ... view
  • 25 Jun 2008 in National Assembly: Mr. Speaker, Sir, it is, indeed, very sad. The three gentlemen were traders dealing in razor blades. They actually lived in Kinangop and were domiciled in Naivasha. It is 13 days now since these people met their death. The car they were travelling in is owned by a driver to one of the Members of Parliament in that region. What is even more curious is that, because of the Minister's constant reference to the High Commission, I decided to call the High Commission yesterday afternoon. I am sad to report to the House that the Deputy to the High Commissioner ... view
  • 25 Jun 2008 in National Assembly: Mr. Speaker, Sir, the police have been to the scene but have not exhumed the bodies. Could you tell us whether your officers have been to the scene and what steps have been taken? So far, as far as we know, only a letter has been written. view
  • 25 Jun 2008 in National Assembly: Mr. Speaker, Sir, I am satisfied to the extent that the Minister is aware that three traders died in Tanzania, and that once his officers have the time they will be able to go and follow up the case and have the bodies brought back in Kenya. Thank you very much. view
  • 25 Jun 2008 in National Assembly: Thank you, Mr. Deputy Speaker, Sir. It is true, as the Assistant Minister has admitted here that, actually, the area he has mentioned is where everybody comes from, particularly from as far as Naivasha. But I do feel very bad because the Assistant Minister has talked about increasing the fuel by ten litres. Fuel amounting to ten litres is not even enough to do one round of patrol at night. Could he, at least, assure us that, that vehicle will be fully fuelled--- We do not know how much fuel it takes, but it operates for 24 hours. An amount ... view
