  • 23 Oct 2013 in National Assembly: Hon. Speaker, Sir, I think this is one of the most timely motions that have come here, and I would hope that if there is anything that needs to be done to ensure that the Government listens and implements this, we should go the extra step. view
  • 23 Oct 2013 in National Assembly: With those few remarks, hon. Speaker, Sir, I support this Motion. view
  • 22 Oct 2013 in National Assembly: Thank you, hon. Temporary Deputy Speaker, Sir, for your generosity. Unfortunately, the issue I wanted to raise was sensitive but now it has been overtaken by events. So, I wish to withhold whatever was my point of order. view
  • 16 Oct 2013 in National Assembly: Hon. Speaker, I rise to support this Motion. The multiplicity of ID Cards leads to gross inefficiencies and gray areas and I think this needs to be simplified. I am in total agreement with that. The issues of identifications of all kinds need to be treated with tremendous care and rigor. We have many people who have entered this country from neighboring countries and from the Asian Sub-Continent. These people have been able to acquire these documents in the shortest of time even though they would not have followed due process. In the process of seeking this unification, it will ... view
  • 10 Oct 2013 in National Assembly: Hon. Deputy Speaker, it is related to the interruptions that took place when the Leader of the Majority Party was speaking, which came from a stranger. I do not know how the stranger got into the House. That is the matter I was raising. It is also a bad omen and a rare custom. view
  • 10 Oct 2013 in National Assembly: Hon. Deputy Speaker, I am very pleased with the enhancement that has been described by the Leader of Majority Party. They have moved to the digital platform and that is commendable. That is the way we should go. Yesterday when we had this special Motion on transport, there was the issue of duplication. It has been difficult to know which Committee is discussing what and where. In this digital age, I hope such information will be availed, so that any Member who is interested can find at any one time what Committees are discussing, so that they can decide which ... view
  • 10 Oct 2013 in National Assembly: Thank you, hon. Temporary Deputy Speaker. I rise to support the Bill. Issues of tax and taxation are extremely important to any economy, because that is how the country gets resources that become the engine of our growth. In the business of paying taxes and conforming to the timelines set, sometimes there are disagreements. This Bill seeks to smoothen out those areas. If the payers have the confidence that the law requires payment at a certain time and a certain amount, and if there is a dispute, it will be expeditiously, prudently and fairly looked into, they will have the ... view
  • 10 Oct 2013 in National Assembly: Despite the complexity of these amendments, the basic message in it is: pay your taxes; if you disagree, you have an appeal mechanism that will deal with all your views, whether they are about VAT or other forms of taxation in one house, and they will be looked at speedily, that is in not more than 90 days. This is an extremely important amendment. I urge my colleagues to support this Bill, so that we can end up in a setting that is consistent with the double digit economic growth that we want. We cannot achieve it without collecting taxes ... view
  • 10 Oct 2013 in National Assembly: With those comments, I support. view
  • 10 Oct 2013 in National Assembly: Hon. Temporary Deputy Speaker, given the great interest in this subject, I would like to suggest that we go down to two minutes after this speaker. view
