  • 29 May 2019 in Senate: I come from Turkana County and we have the same problem. People say that we have fallow land in Turkana and nobody uses it. Some say that the land in Turkana and Maasai areas are not occupied. Those who think so should rethink. Those are grazing lands. We have a lot of livestock that need large tracts of land to graze. view
  • 29 May 2019 in Senate: The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) is now penetrating Turkana County and taking huge chunks of land for what they call ―military use.‖ Why does the KDF need big land and why should we have many army bases in Turkana? There is a hidden agenda. However, whenever I mention that, they oppose it vehemently. Of course, I do not believe them. If they take land, they should compensate our herdsmen because that land is there for grazing. That is a big problem we have in the country and we need to find a way of dealing with it. Otherwise, wananchi will ... view
  • 29 May 2019 in Senate: People should also be consulted. We should have meetings where people are told what will happen--- view
  • 29 May 2019 in Senate: Mr. Deputy Speaker, Sir, I would have liked to debate. I thank you. view
  • 23 May 2019 in Senate: Thank you, Mr. Speaker, Sir, for also giving me the chance to give my views on this issue. The idea of taking guns away from Kenya Police Reservists (KPRs) is ill- conceived. Why would you take away guns when you know that some citizens of this country are being left without any protection? If the Government wanted to take away the guns, they should have put in in place other security measures to safeguard those zones with these ever changing circumstances; where people get killed on a daily basis. The electronic version of the Senate Hansard Report is for information ... view
  • 23 May 2019 in Senate: I called the Inspector of Police at Kapedo Police Station after I got calls from all over Turkana County. I asked the County Commander why anyone would make such an uninformed decision to take away guns and leave people without any form of protection. What is this nonsense called “orders from above”? Is that person from “above” who makes such decisions thinking or living in some world that he does not know the situation in northern Kenya? Mr. Speaker, Sir, I hope whoever made that decision will reconsider it and give back KPR guns, so that they can protect these ... view
  • 10 Apr 2019 in Senate: Thank you, Madam Temporary Speaker, for giving me chance to support this Petition from Hon. Mwaruma about the people of Taveta who are being denied their rights. view
  • 10 Apr 2019 in Senate: Imagine a situation where someone walks in here and says, ―May I use this piece of land for a particular purpose?‖ Then you nicely say, ―Go ahead and use it‖ and then they say by the way we are going to pay you later for the land that we are using. Then you wait and wait and nothing happens. We had a similar situation in Kitui where peoples land has been taken for road construction and no payments has been made. It is still going on and the time when we visited, we were told that people were going to ... view
  • 10 Apr 2019 in Senate: This mistreatment of a people by their own government is not acceptable. The government of the people should be nicer to the people than other organizations or anything else that is not the government. So, the people of Taita Taveta deserve to be given respect. They need to be compensated for their land that has been used for road construction. I fully support the Petition that has been read by Sen. Mwaruma on behalf of the people of Taita-Taveta. I thank you. view
  • 10 Apr 2019 in Senate: Thank you, Madam Temporary Speaker. I will use those two minutes. First, I thank the hon. Senator from Isiolo County for bringing up this Petition. The question is why do we need so many military bases in a place like Isiolo? Are the people of Isiolo so dangerous that they must be covered by 10 military camps? These military camps will obviously need a place to go. So, they land on helpless poor people and take away their land. 40,000 herdsmen and women who keep the land for their animals to graze on are the ones whose lands will be ... view
