Kenya is a signatory to the World Health Assembly Resolution –WHA 2872 of 1975– which requires each member state to develop a comprehensive well coordinated blood transfusion service based on voluntary non-remunerated blood donation. Kenya is also a signatory to the regional Commonwealth Ministers of Health Resolution of 1989 requiring that each member country makes the provision of safe blood to the people a national priority. Ensuring effective and dependable supply of safe blood and blood products is an important public heath responsibility of every government, yet the Government support for blood transfusion services in the country is inadequate. We have issues to do with timelines, public participation on whether the stakeholders are involved and issues which results to uncertainty and unpredictability of the environment.
