Millie has received the YWCA Democracy Award and the Eve woman of the year for human rights and gender. Her political tipping point came when she served as a delegate at the Bomas of Kenya, during the constitutional drafting process. • 25 Nov 2014 in National Assembly: Yes, hon. Speaker. I just wanted to inform the House that the new Chairman for the ODM Party just walked in! For us, the way we recognise him, we call him: “Chairman dwa !” view
  • 25 Nov 2014 in National Assembly: Thank you, hon. Speaker. view
  • 25 Nov 2014 in National Assembly: Thank you, hon. Temporary Deputy Speaker for giving me this opportunity. First of all, I take this opportunity to offer my condolences to the families of the Kenyans who were slain in Mandera. It is unfortunate that this is not an isolated case and as the other hon. Members have indicated, we have also had other cases in Kapedo, Mpeketoni and the recent killings of the police. As the hon. Members have indicated and with which I concur, there appears to be a complete breakdown of the security system in this country. There is something that hon. Jakoyo Midiwo has ... view
  • 25 Nov 2014 in National Assembly: Shebesh has just shared with me a clip of a young lady who has been stripped in a matatu and the men are touching and pulling off all parts of her private parts in the business of saying that this is an issue of dressing badly. The reason I am saying this is because the issue of security touches on the issue of terrorism--- view
  • 25 Nov 2014 in National Assembly: It also touches on violence against women. You do not need to defend me. You know that I can hold my own. I want to indicate that there is a level of lawlessness in this country that has never been seen before. I want to agree with the hon. Member who has called on the Chairman of the Departmental Committee on Administration and National Security to resign. I have no issue against my brother but if it is not an issue of resignation because I know that the role they play is oversight, but we are reaching a level where ... view
  • 19 Nov 2014 in National Assembly: Thank you, hon. Speaker for giving me this opportunity. On my own behalf, my family, the people of Mbita that I serve and on behalf of Homa Bay County where I also serve as the Chair of the Parliamentarians, I take this opportunity to offer my condolences to the family, relatives and friends of Senator Otieno Kajwang’. I was shocked to learn about his demise today at 1.00 a.m. when we rushed to hospital and confirmed our worst fears. I knew Senator Kajwang’ under different categories. First, Senator Kajwang’ and I share a common great grandmother from Koloo Kanyala in ... view
  • 19 Nov 2014 in National Assembly: I last saw him in Oyugis where he did what he was excellent at: Serving the party with a lot of humour and with a lot of joy. I, therefore, want to say it is unfortunate, it is shocking and may the Lord place his soul in eternal peace. I also take this opportunity to wish the father a quick recovery. May God bless us; may God bless the people of Mbita. view
  • 18 Nov 2014 in National Assembly: Thank you, hon. Temporary Deputy Speaker. I support for very few reasons. First, she is very qualified. Secondly, it is very difficult for women to reach these high levels especially because of issues of discrimination. You can even see that on simple issues like dressing, the men are harassing us left, right and centre. You can, therefore, see that for a woman to reach this level, she has done exceptionally well. Even though I know that this issue of dressing is coming up, I want to tell my dear brothers that my dressing is my right. You shall not dictate ... view
  • 18 Nov 2014 in National Assembly: Therefore, I fully support and urge the men to support us to protect our women. Amen. view
  • 18 Nov 2014 in National Assembly: Thank you, hon. Temporary Deputy Speaker. I am already there First of all, I want to take this opportunity to congratulate hon. Shebesh for bringing this Motion. I wish to strongly condemn the acts that were perpetrated against these women. I was just taking the opportunity to look at the Sexual Offences Act and the wording of “complainant”. I agree with hon. Midiwo that we may need to bring an amendment because it only allows a complainant who is a child or anybody else to bring a complaint against a person who is a child. view
