As the Chief Justice leaves office today, it is regrettable that he leaves at a time when we are going more or less backwards in terms of the institutionalisation of democracy in this country. What has been happening in this nation in the last three weeks is really a throwback to old times. There is growing authoritarianism. In the last two days, we saw what amounts to detention without trial. The police ... view
