The Makonde people are natives of Mozambique and Tanzania where they enjoy full recognition as citizens of the two countries. Kenya hosts a significant population of the Makonde people residing in Kwale County, who first came into the country over 50 years ago as labourers. Apart from the gazetted forests which we knew many years ago, there are forests which were maintained by county councils and the communities who lived within the forested areas. Particularly, I would like to talk about Bota Forest. The last speaker talked about Boni Forest which is also part of the Garissa County. This forest is the only forest in the Northern Kenya and it extends up to Somalia.
