  • 26 Apr 2023 in National Assembly: (iii) Address the depreciation of the Kenya Shilling against other currencies? (iv) Outline the immediate steps the Government is taking to stabilize the economy and set the country on a growth trajectory? Thank you, Hon. Speaker. view
  • 26 Apr 2023 in National Assembly: Thank you, Hon. Speaker. From the outset, while the Prime Cabinet Secretary has outlined the long-term measures that the Government is hoping to benefit from and jumpstart our economy, I have not heard adequate steps that the Government will take to address the cost of living in the short-term and in the medium-term. It is good to provide fertilisers for our farms, but 30 per cent of our population lives in urban centres where they are suffering from the high cost of living. Apart from the wish-list that, perhaps, there will be a bumper harvest or the global economy will ... view
  • 26 Apr 2023 in National Assembly: Government is leaving Kenyans entirely to the vagaries of the economy in terms of supply and demand issues. The second point that I wanted to speak about is that since the Prime Cabinet Secretary has highlighted the runaway debt crisis in the country, our escalating national debt is like an albatross which, if not handled with the care and seriousness it demands, could choke the life out of our national economy and undermine our national development. I already hear from economists that our national debt is already above Ksh10 trillion. So, what concrete action is the Government taking to ensure ... view
  • 26 Apr 2023 in National Assembly: Hon. Speaker, could the Prime Cabinet Secretary explain the steps the Government is taking to ensure that there is adequate relief food supply and distribution to the parts of the country severely affected by famine and drought? view
  • 26 Apr 2023 in National Assembly: Thank you, Hon. Speaker. I very much appreciate the Prime Cabinet Secretary’s presentation. He has given us a picture of the assistance the Government is providing to communities affected by drought and famine. However, I note that Nairobi, with one of the largest populations suffering from poverty, is completely left out of the relief food distribution. There are pockets of abject poverty and increasing hunger exacerbated by high unemployment in the informal settlements in our capital city. These communities have no safety nets and often fall through the cracks. What measures is the Government taking to ensure that these neglected ... view
  • 20 Apr 2023 in National Assembly: Thank you, Hon. Temporary Speaker for giving me this chance to contribute. I join the rest of the House in supporting this Motion at this moment when these issues are quite common in our society, particularly in large estates run by multinationals companies that have very good and strict regulations in the management of their staff. This incident has not been addressed for a long time. view
  • 20 Apr 2023 in National Assembly: Sexual harassment and abuse are heinous crimes that cause immense harm to the victims, particularly women. These actions are forms of violence that violates the person’s autonomy and dignity. They can have long lasting physical and psychological consequences or impact. As it has been said here, it is ravaging many homes in our country. Sexual harassment is another form of gender-based violence. It involves unwanted sexual advances, comments, gestures or physical contact. It seems as if we have accepted this as normal behaviour. Denigration of women, including objectification, belittling and disrespect, also perpetuates harmful gender stereotypes and reinforces unequal power ... view
  • 20 Apr 2023 in National Assembly: Another aspect of this is negative masculinity that often plays out in perpetuating these harms. These are traditional ideas about what it means to be a man. The idea that a man should be dominant, aggressive and sexually assertive can also fuel a sense of entitlement that contributes to sexual abuse and harassment. We also need to fight this type of traditional behaviour and empower young boys. We should train and educate them in schools about aspects that will reinforce the fact that they do not need to be involved in toxic masculinity but can become men who support their ... view
  • 20 Apr 2023 in National Assembly: Sexual abuse and harassment, and the denigration of women are the serious social problems that have profound impacts on individuals and society. We must work to challenge harmful gender stereotypes and promote the culture that respects bodily autonomy, gender equality and human dignity. I also condemn the despicable acts that we have recently seen on social media in the last few days where the privacy of women is violated. These are detestable The electronic version of the Official Hansard Report is for information purposesonly. A certified version of this Report can be obtained from the Hansard Editor. view
  • 20 Apr 2023 in National Assembly: actions that we must all condemn. The media must not be used as an outlet to demonise and stigmatise our women. We must reject the invasion of one’s private affairs which the public has no legitimate concern or wrongful intrusion into one’s private activities in such manner as to outrage or cause mental suffering, shame or humiliation to a person of ordinary sensibilities. Our society must have zero tolerance to all kinds of stigmatisation, demonisation and objectification of women. view
